Nympho Nurses and Dirty Doctors: University students in costume as the Carnage UK event kicks off in Cardiff

Britain's most notorious and debauched student pub crawl got under way yesterday with hundreds of revellers stumbling around Cardiff City centre, showing the effects of cut-price alcohol and binge drinking.

It was the first Carnage UK event of the new academic year, and the display saw university students unashamedly smooching in doorways, vomiting in the streets and young girls being carried home unconscious.

With the theme 'Nympho Nurses and Dirty Doctors', many of the mostly teenage crowd wore barely-there outfits and some were slumped in a heap on the pavement by the end of the night.

Joining in: Thousands of students took part in the event - an pub crawl through the city centre - and police officers seemed happy to pose for photographs with them

Carnage UK has become notorious for running cheap alcohol events for undergraduates in university towns and cities across the UK.

Last night saw the company hold its first pub crawl of the new academic year.

Need a lift? A teenage boy carries his drunk friend over his shoulder when she is incapable of walking, while another couple start kissing by a shop window

One photograph shows a man urinating in a bin in the middle of a busy shopping street in front of horrified onlookers.

In another, a teenager is slumped in a doorway, clearly the worse for wear as he vomits on the footpath outside a shop.

Another shows a man removing his T-shirt and strolling bare chested through the city centre with a drunken girl hoisted over his shoulder, wearing hot pants.

One shocked 18-year-old, a Cardiff University fresher said: 'Most people got very drunk because they were downing their drinks before moving to the next bar.'

She said: 'I couldn't believe the state that some people got into, but it wasn't very surprising considering what people were drinking.

'I saw people falling down over in the street and being sick, it wasn't very nice.
'I saw one boy being carried by his mates at 10pm, but I saw him still drinking two hours later - when he couldn't even stand up.'

The unnamed student said that the event had been highly anticipated at her halls of residence.

She said: 'Everyone was saying that it was a great chance to get drunk and have a laugh.

'A lot of the girls were hoping they could meet some guys and do things they wouldn't do when sober.'

A spokesman for Varsity Leisure Group, which runs the event, said: 'We encourage all of our customers to drink responsibly.'

But the scenes have become commonplace in university cities across the country as the UK's largest student pub crawl goes on unchecked.

In 2009, 19-year-old student Philip Lain desecrated a poppy wreath in Sheffield and was later ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service and pay £185 costs after admitting outraging public decency.
